A Canadian native, Dr. Amanda Martyn grew up in Ontario, just north of Toronto. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Guelph, specializing in the stress response and molecular neuropsychology. Dr. Martyn additionally completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Robarts Research Institute at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada, studying Alzheimer’s disease, and, after relocating to North Carolina, a post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University, studying Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Her research contributions have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Between graduate degrees, Dr. Martyn spent several years as a coordinator for multiple molecular biology courses at the University of Guelph, teaching upcoming scientists general molecular biology theory and technique in both a classroom and laboratory setting.
In 2013, Dr. Martyn joined the NC School of Science and Mathematics as an Instructor of Biology, teaching courses Molecular & Classical Genetics, Epidemiology, Global Public Health and Forensic Science in the online and open enrollment programs. She has earned the 2019 North Carolina Association for Biomedical Research (NCABR) Distinguished Teacher in STEM Education and in March 2020 was awarded a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Promoting Innovation in Science and Mathematics (PRISM) Grant.
Dr. Martyn is also an active member with 100Kin10, an organization whose mission is to identify and improve on the grand challenges of STEM education nationwide.
When not inspiring students, Dr. Martyn is spending time with her family, teaching horseback riding in the equestrian discipline of dressage, training her Lusitano mare named Luna, or cheering on the Carolina Panthers. #keeppounding
